Italian Soccer Teams Have Colorful Nicknames

If there are three things you can count on Italians to be passionate about it would be: their food, their family and their soccer (calcio). The pride of Italian’s for their favorite team  knows no bounds. You can find fans (tifosi) fearlessly cheering in all kinds of weather, against all kinds of rivals, and with a dedication that endures generations. Part of the fun of learning about soccer in Italy is also learning about the nicknames of the teams. But first, its important to understand how soccer works in Italy. Soccer is broken down into various clubs, or â€Å"serie.† The best is â€Å"Serie A† followed by â€Å"Serie B† and â€Å"Serie C† etc. Teams in each â€Å"serie† compete against each other. The best team in â€Å"Serie A† is regarded as the best team in italy. The competition in Serie A is fierce and if a team doesn’t win or do well in a season, they can be demoted to a lower â€Å"serie† much to the shame and disappointment of their adoring fans. Now that you understand the basics of how Italian teams are ranked, it is easier to understand their nicknames. Italian Soccer Team Nicknames Some of these nicknames seem random but they all have a story. For example, one of my favorites is the Mussi Volanti (Flying Donkeys—Chievo). They were given this nickname by their rival team, Verona, because the odds of Chievo entering the Serie A league was so slim (like the English expression to express unlikely odds, â€Å"When pigs fly!† In Italian, it’s â€Å"When donkey’s fly!†).    I Diavoli (The Devils—(Milan), are called as such because of their red and black jerseys. I Felsinei (Bologna—is based on the ancient city name, Felsina), and I Lagunari (Venezia— comes from the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo that sits adjacent to the lagoon). Many teams, in fact, have multiple nicknames. For instance, the illustrious Juventus team (a longstanding member and winner of Serie A) is also known as La Vecchia Signora (The Old Lady), La Fidanzata dItalia (The Girlfriend of Italy), Le Zebre (The Zebras), and [La] Signora Omicidi ([The] Lady Killer). The Old lady is a joke because Juventus means young, and lady was added by rivals who were essentially poking fun of the team. It got it’s â€Å"girlfriend of Italy† nickname due to a large amount of southern Italians who, lacking their own Serie A team, became attached to Juventus, the third oldest (and most winning) team in Italy. Besides these less obvious nicknames, one other colorful tradition, is to refer to the teams by the color of their soccer jerseys (le maglie calcio). The terms are frequently seen in print (Palermo, 100 Anni di Rosanero), as part of fan club names (Linea GialloRossa), and in official publications. Even the Italian national soccer team is known as Gli Azzurri because of their blue jerseys. Below is a list of the nicknames associated with the 2015 Serie A Italian soccer teams when referring to their jersey colors: AC Milan: RossoneriAtalanta: NerazzurriCagliari: RossobluCesena: Cavallucci MariniChievo Verona: GiallobluEmpoli: AzzurriFiorentina: ViolaGenoa: RossobluHellas Verona: GiallobluInternazionale: NerazzurriJuventus: BianconeriLazio: BiancocelestiNapoli: AzzurriPalermo: RosaneroParma: GiallobluRoma: GiallorossiSampdoria: BlucerchiatiSassuolo: NeroverdiTorino: il Toro, i GranataUdinese: Bianconeri

Winning And Loosing By Paul Galdone - 826 Words

Winning and Loosing Just like any other character developed by a child, nature and nurture are significant factors in reading and writing habits.Research shows that attitude towards reading and writing cultivated early can largely affect the ability of children to express themselves through writing. In most cases, children’sfirst encounter with books is bedtime stories from their parents. My journey of reading and writing was a rollercoaster. A story of battles, some won others lost. The best memory I have of a book is reading andcomprehending the tale of The Three Little Pigs by Paul Galdone. I gained insight about wisdom from the choices made by the three pigs. It was among the first books I borrowed from our local library. For me, reading this book was similar to a hard-earned dollar. The significance of this novel was freedom. Moreover, it was the first book the librarian let me pick out for myself. The story was fascinating that I found myself acting it out alone. Reading and writing was never easy for me. The fear of coming across a new word traumatized me. My major worry was the inability to pronounce a new word especially in front of an audience. Writing was not easy either and even the competition for reading and writing in my class was high. The first time I was able to spell my name was the significant writing accomplishment mainly because I had to write it thrice before I got it right. My inspiration for reading and writing is my mother. She is an avid

Six Tenants of Dow Theory

Question: Briefly explain the six tenants of Dow Theory. Critically evaluate the major technical techniques and indicators for successful trading. Answer: There are six tenets of Dow Theory: 1. Everything is discounted by average The market projects all the information that is available and it can be positive or negative. The only thing is that an act of God cannot be predicted. Prices project all the relevant information and the expectation of the various parties (Adriaanse, 2002). The process of average discounts the positive and the negative news all and hence, the price of the stock contains all the information 2. Three trend is available in the market Three trends are seen in the market that is the primary trend, the secondary and the minor trend. The primary trend is the major trend and remains in effect for over 1 year. This trend is helpful for them who invest in the long term. The secondary trend can be said to be a correction in the primary trend. This trend helps in knowing the correct direction and to know about the position of the primary trend. The minor trend is a short swing that remains in operation from hours to month (Adriaanse, 2002). The intraday investors for dealing in stocks use the minor trend. 3. Three phases exist in the market The market witness three phases that is the accumulation, absorption and the distribution phase. The entire three trends depend upon the market scenario. The three trends are based upon the Dow concept of uptrend and low trend. 4. Average must be confirmed When there is a change in the average or a new is witness in the secondary or intermediate high then the other, average is required to do the same to make the signal valid. The validity of the signal is essential as it ensures that a change has occurred. This helps to take appropriate course of action. 5. The trend must be confirmed by the volume The volume should show an increment in the direction of the trend that is major. In the case of an uptrend the volume, show an increment during the rally. Volume should be used to confirm the trend because if the volume and the chart do not match then it is a case of divergence that means that the change is not valid. 6. A trend remains intact until a definite sign of reversal According to Dow Theory, market continues to be in trend and will deviate until the time a definite sign of reversal is seen (Adriaanse, 2002). A trend cannot be judged by a general low because in a trend there is always ups and downs. On the contrary, for a trend to change it must be accompanied by a change and reversal. The major technical indicator or tools that are used for successful trading are: Relative strength indicator (RSI) It provide the overbought and oversold level. When above the level of 70 it is, overbought while below 30 is oversold. When overbought, it must be sold and when oversold (below 30) must be bought. Average Strength Index (ADX) - it projects the strength of the trend. It can be used to know whether the stock has the potential to reach the overbought or oversold level. It does not show the direction but helps to answer whether the power of the trend (Adriaanse, 2002). Bollinger band it shows the movement as per the band. The higher band and the lower band can be used to know the buy and sell level. Fibonacci Retracement that shows the retracement level and the higher and lower value can be determined (Graham Smart, 2012). Various levels can be used to know the level from where it will find support and resistance. It is one of the best method that helps in ascertaining where the stock will move. Various Laboratory Tests on Cement free essay sample

Initial and Final Setting Time of Cement FINENESS OF CEMENT: We need to determine the fineness of cement by dry sieving as per IS: 4031 (Part 1) – 1996. The principle of this is that we determine the proportion of cement whose grain size is larger than specified mesh size. Apparatus: The apparatus used are ) 75Â µm IS Sieve ii) Balance capable of weighing 10g to the nearest 10mg iii) A nylon or pure bristle brush, preferably with 25 to 40mm iv) bristle, for cleaning the sieve Figure No. Sieve No. 200 Procedure to determine fineness of cement: i) Weigh approximately 10g of cement to the nearest 0. 01g and place it on the sieve. Agitate the sieve by swirling, planetary and linear movements, until no more fine material passes through it. iii) Weigh the residue and express its mass as a percentage R1,of the quantity first placed on the sieve to the nearest 0. 1 percent. v) Gently brush all the fine material off the base of the sieve. The apparatus for conducting the Le-Chatelier test should conform to IS: 5514 – 1969 Balance, whose permissible variation at a load of 1000g should be +1. 0g and Water bath. Procedure to determine soundness of cement i) Place the mould on a glass sheet and fill it with the cement paste formed by gauging cement with 0. 78 times the water required to give a paste of standard consistency. ii) Cover the mould with another piece of glass sheet, place a small weight on this covering glass sheet and immediately submerge the whole assembly in water at a temperature of 27 Â ± 2oC and keep it there for 24hrs. To do so we need Vicat apparatus conforming to IS: 5513 – 1976, Balance, whose permissible variation at a load of 1000g should be +1. 0g, Gauging trowel conforming to IS: 10086 – 1982. Procedure to determine initial and final setting time of cement : i) Prepare a cement paste by gauging the cement with 0. 85 times the water required to give a paste of standard consistency. ii) Start a stop-watch, the moment water is added to the cement. iii) Fill the Vicat mould completely with the cement paste gauged as above, the mould resting on a non-porous plate and smooth off the surface of the paste making it level with the top of the mould. The cement block thus prepared in the mould is the test block. Place the test block under the rod bearing the needle. Lower the needle gently in order to make contact with the surface of the cement paste and release quickly, allowing it to penetrate the test block. Repeat the procedure till the needle fails to pierce the test block to a point 5. 0 Â ± 0. 5mm measured from the bottom of the mould. The time period elapsing between the time, water is added to the cement and the time, the needle fails to pierce the test block by 5. 0 Â ± 0. mm measured from the bottom of the mould, is the initial setting time.

An Exercise in Identifying Paragraph Breaks in Essays

An Exercise in Identifying Paragraph Breaks in Essays This exercise will give you practice in paragraphingorganizing sentences into unified paragraphs in a coherent essay. InstructionsWhen originally published in 1913, this humorous essay by Homer Croy was divided into 17 paragraphs. The essay has been reprinted here without any line spaces or indentations.Either on your own or in a group, decide where the paragraph breaks should be, and be prepared to explain why. When youre done, compare your version of the essay with the original version of Bathing in a Borrowed Suit. Keep in mind that many arrangements are possible and that your version of the essay may have more than or fewer than 17 paragraphs.   Bathing in a Borrowed Suit by Homer Croy (1883-1965) The desire to be seen on the beach in a borrowed bathing suit is not so strong in me as it once was. An acquaintance, under the guise of friendship, lured me out to his beach one day, saying that he had full rights to the most popular ocean in the world. I had heard his ocean spoken highly of, and I accepted. Unfortunately I forgot to take my bathing suit, but he said that that was nothingthat he had one that would fit me as the paper on the wall. As I recall it those were his exact words. At last he found it in the basement, where it seems that the mice, to get the salt, had helped themselves rather liberally to its none too strong fabric. From the holes in the suit it was easy to see that the party had been a merry one and had not broken up till a late hour. The suit had never been planned for a person of my general architecture. Roughly speaking, I am fashioned along the lines of the Woolworth Building, with a slight balcony effect about the thirty-third floor. The suit had been i ntended for a smallish person given to bathing principally by himself. It was, in its present state, mostly a collection of holes rather insecurely held together with yarn. The waist would have been tight on a doll, while the trunks looked like a pair of pulse-warmers. I tried to find a place to get into the suit, but it stuck together like a wet paper bag. At last I got part way in only to find that my arms were sticking through where a couple of mice had polished off a meal. Finally I felt that I had the suit on and looked in the mirror. I drew back in startled surprise. There were two foreign marks on my body. One I recognized after a moment as being where my collar button had rubbed, but the other was larger. It was a dark splotch as if I had run into the bureau. But, on looking more closely, I saw that it was the bathing suit. Even under the most favorable circumstances, when attired in a bathing suit, I dont live long in the memory of strangers. Rarely ever is my photograph taken by a shore photographer and put up in his exhibition case, and prac tically never does a cluster of people gather around me, talking excitedly with bursts of involuntary applause. My friends were waiting on the lawn for me to join them. Taking a firm grip on my courage I walked out into the yard. The ladies were gaily chatting and smiling until they saw me, when suddenly they closed the conversation and turned to gaze far out over the blue horizon to a dim, distant sail. The ocean looked only a couple of blocks away, but we seemed to walk miles. I was the cynosure of all eyes. I had never been a cynosure before, and in fact didnt know that I had any talent in that line, but now, as a cynosure, I was a great success. When some rude boys came up and began to make personal remarks in the tone that such remarks are usually made in, I abandoned the rest of the party and hurried for the water. I plunged in, but I plunged too hard. My suit had got past the plunging stage. When I came up there was little on me besides the sea foam and a spirit of jollity. The latter was feigned. Something told me to keep to the deep. My friends called me and insisted that I come asho re to play in the sand with them, but I answered that I loved the ocean too well and wanted its sheltering arms around me. I had to have something around me. I must get back to the house and into my clothes. I worked down the beach until I was out of sight, and made a break for the solace of the basement from whence the suit had come. Many people were out walking but I did not join any of them, and as they stared at me, I began to walk faster and faster. Soon I was running. A large dog that I had never seen before rushed at me. I turned around and gave him one lowering look, but he evidently did not catch it, for he came straight on. I looked around for a rock to use for something that I had in mind, but somebody had removed all the desirable ones. So I turned my back to the ill-bred creature and started on. However, this did not cut him the way I had hoped. Instead, he came on with renewed interest. I did not want him to follow me, but this seemed to be his intention, although he had received no encouragement on my part. I sped up and tried to lose him, but my efforts were fruitless, and to make it mor e unpleasant he kept up a loud, discordant barking which jarred on my sensitive ear. I gained the yard and plunged against the door of the house, but some thoughtful person had closed it. I ran around to the rear, but the person had done his work well. So I ran back with some vague hope that the door would be open, although I knew quite well it wouldnt be. My surmises were right. Back the dog and I ran together, while curious passers-by began to stare. I soon found myself almost out of breath, but the dog seemed to be quite fresh. However, I ran back again. At last I came upon a basement door that was open, dived in and shut the door after me. I took particular pains to do that. I continued to remain in the basement. Although the time hung heavily on my hands I did not stroll out to chat with the townspeople. In the course of time my friend returned and looked at me strangely. Arent you feeling well? he asked pityingly. No, I answered sadly. I feel kind of run down. But why did you get in this basement? he asked. It belongs to the man next door. Of late I get all th e bathing I want with a sponge behind closed doors. I would rather have a sponge that has been in the family a long time at my back, than a strange dog similarly located, with whose habits I am not familiar. Bathing in a Borrowed Suit by Homer Croy originally appeared in Life magazine (July 1913) and was reprinted in Our American Humorists by Thomas L. Masson (Moffat, Yard and Company, 1922).

Organisational Transformation in Practice Assignment

Organisational Transformation in Practice - Assignment Example The task requirement was to attempt the project in the light of the lectures and seminars attended on the subject matter within a period of 2 months. The project was to be done in groups that were made by random selection of people; meaning they were made by the instructor and not according to our will in order to ensure an even distribution so that all individuals of the same calibre do not form a single group. In my case, a group of six members were formed; two of which were friends already, while the rest of us barely knew each other. Moreover, the team leader assigned was a female. The main challenge was to cope and keep pace with the team members and complete the assigned task within time. Performing projects within the given time constraint had never been an issue for me, but what really served as a challenge for me while working on this particular project was the aspect of working with a team that were I was not entirely familiar with. And this aspect of learning how to deal w ith people I don’t know, which is especially crucial when it comes to team tasks, is precisely the most valuable thing that I take away from this experience. Self-Awareness Despite being a fairly social person, it has always been hard for me to adjust to new people. I always need some time to get comfortable while interacting with people I don’t know. So, during the first few weeks I felt very uncomfortable working with new team. Although, I have a friendly personality, but still I needed some time and space to get along with the new members. The group kicked off the work with small tasks such as role plays and brainstorming exercises; which encouraged us to speak up and to share our view points. These exercise helped us understand and get to know each other. But still the major task was yet to be done. Later, in third week we were directed to start thinking about a Multinational Company that we, as a group would choose for the project. This proved to be quite a diffic ult stage for all the team members as this is where conflicts started to arise because everyone had his separate opinions. I noticed that some of my team members were reluctant to share their viewpoint, while some members kept on bombarding their ideas. The most enthusiastic of the lot in giving their inputs were the two members that were friends already and who were of the view that the group should consider Red Cross for the study at hand. At that stage, I personally felt that those two friends were quite strong in our group due to their affiliation as the rest of us had still not opened up to each other and were therefore, a little hesitant at these initial stages of work. So, my leader asked every member to give their best shot regarding the company, which they thought was the best. Although, I did not like the company that was chosen for our study, but still I had to accept it as I was working in a team, the aspect of which can be related to the term referred to as â€Å"Chang e Management Iceberg† by Wilfred Kruger (Kruger, n.d.). Moreover, the most difficult tasks for me were: group working, and practical implication of applying knowledge and theories to the assigned task. I was able to deal with these two aspects only through talking myself into believing that it’s never too late to learn new skills be it human or technical, and by taking every aspect of that whole project
